Dan spent his last ~8 years as an Addiction Medicine Physician, helping people with addictions to stay in recovery.
His job was focused on treating patients with suboxone and methadone, medications that would stop them from going through the anguish of physical withdrawal, so that they could survive the mental side of recovery. These medications are life saving, and he knew that.
Recently, when a patient was being denied coverage for their medication, he spent so much time fighting for them, fighting for their life. That fight doesn’t just apply to this patient or even just to his job. If he knew something needed to happen, he made it happen. My dad never stopped fighting for what he believed in, up to his last moments.
If you are able to at this time, contributing to the Herren Fund will help continue the fight to get people the help that they need. Breaking down some of the financial barriers that stand in so many peoples’ way, they provide many free resources for recovery, made possible by fundraising.
You can also honor his recent work by learning about addiction as the disease it is. Approach it with curiosity, not judgement. And encourage others to do the same. Check out the Herren Fund’s page. There is a lot of really incredible stuff on here.
