MY STORY
My dad did not live to see age 40. One month shy of a new decade, he died from an acute overdose on top of long term substance abuse. The last years of his 30s, leading up to this point, he lost so much and pulled further and further away - unable to get or take the help he needed.
Like many people in their late 30s, shortly after I turned 37 - I started to really examine my life and consider what I wanted by the time I reached a new decade. I wanted my years leading up to this milestone to be fulfilling and I wanted to enter my 40s healthy and happy. At that point, I'd run 10 marathons over the course of ~12 years. I'd become competitive - running Boston, and running NYC and Tokyo as a qualifier. I'd run sub 3:15. But this level of running was hard on my body and mind, I was tired of injuries, and was losing my love for the sport due to the process of intense training to compete in marathons.
So I created a different kind of goal - one that would run me into the next decade happy, healthy, and fulfilled through things I loved: running and travel.
40 marathons. 40 countries. 4 years. Finishing within the month leading to my 40th birthday. (Feb 2023) It's not about the time and pace, it's about the journey.
I set myself up to have a very different path to age 40 than my father had. I am chasing this goal for me - but also to honor my dad. And to do that, I am raising money for Herren Project. Since 2011, Herren Project has helped thousands of individuals and families heal from the disease of addiction through treatment placement assistance, recovery scholarships and family support services. They have also brought prevention programs and wellness initiatives to schools and communities nationwide to empower people to make healthy choices.
This non-profit organization is doing so many good things with the money raised and it's incredible just how aligned the mission is with the reasons I'm running into age 40 with this crazy goal.
