My youngest daughter Jacqueline is sweet, kind, funny, and incredibly smart. Beauty radiates from within her. Just before returning to college for her sophomore year we found out she was struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. She wanted and needed help. So began the hardest six years of my life. She was in treatment for a year, going to meetings and therapy and learning how to love herself. The courage she has shown throughout this process has kept me strong. She was determined to get better, to find her voice and her beautiful soul. Her five siblings and myself have spent hours in support group meetings and family therapy. There were times at the beginning when I felt as though I had lost my faith. What kind of God would let this happen? Slowly but surely it crept back in, guiding us through this process. I know God threw this mountain in front of us to challenge us, but I was unsure we had it in us to make it to the first ridge. Jackie was able to return to college and graduate with a degree in English and a minor in teaching. In January 2020 Jackie relapsed. This time it was even harder to watch her struggle. Our family was again thrown into turmoil. With the help of The Herren Project and Herren Wellness Jackie returned to recovery. The love and community we have experienced at Herren has spurred me to give back. It is my hope that we can help other families scale this mountain some day. “Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created” Esther 4:14
Our story continues with recurrent relapses. I have learned that it is important for me to let go and let God. I pray every day that Jackie will find her way into longterm recovery. Without my family support group through The Herren Project I would not have made it to the other side. They helped me create boundaries and love Jackie from a distance.
I am running the 2022 London Marathon for the Herren Project because I want to provide hope to families struggling with substance use disorder.
