This coming September I am running the Berlin Marathon in honor of my mother, Judy. My mother was taken from us by the disease of addiction, 13 years ago. She never got to meet my children. They never got to taste her grilled cheese or lay in her lap while she twirled their hair. I felt ashamed and embarrassed about her struggle and how it impacted my sister, brother, and I growing up. I thought I was protecting her by never talking about it. But hopefully, opening up about the way this disease crippled my family, it may help someone else become brave enough to embrace their story, to explore the way their lives have been impacted by addiction. I love you so much Mom. I know you will be the wind at my back when I travel to Germany this September.
I have joined the Herren Project for my run, in hopes of raising money to support their mission. They are saving the lives of mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons everyday. And I am so grateful to be a part of their team.
