Someone living in a hopeless existence may go on to inspire others

I understand from personal experience what it's like to live in an endless cycle of hopelessness and self-destruction. Now, I'm training to swim the Catalina Channel.

For a decade during the prime of my life, I had given up on myself. I was living in a cycle of despair and destructive behavior which negatively affected those closest to me. I was a burden.

Through the gift of Recovery, I have been able to rediscover a hopeful and productive existence - to become a contributing member of society. I have enjoyed becoming a reliable colleague, friend and family member.

In the time since I have completed treatment for alcoholism, I have also discovered the joy - and importance - of helping others. I have become a swim coach and have focused much of these efforts towards mentoring others in Recovery through a supplemental program of swimming.

I have also swam progressively longer Open Water Marathon Swim events to demonstrate what's possible in Recovery.

In 2019, I swam 12 kilometers - longer than anything I had ever done before - and began my awareness and fundraising campaign in support of the Herren Project. I raised $500 during this initial swim campaign.

In 2020, I swam 12 miles around Coronado Island and raised $5,000 for THP. In September 2021, I will attempt to swim the Catalina Channel, which is 20 miles across the open ocean off the coast of California - just a mile shy of the English Channel distance.

I do this to demonstrate just how dramatic of a transformation Recovery can make in one's life. Although such feats of endurance might appear daring and impressive, the true and more meaningful impact of Recovery is how we can quietly go about improving the lives of those around us. It is by being a reliable spouse, being present as a parent, contributing as a co-worker and importantly, helping others who suffer to transform their own lives.

By donating to The Herren Project, you will help me continue the cycle of paying forward the transformative Gift of Recovery.
